On May 29, Congress politician and Punjabi artist Sidhu Moosewala was shot and killed in Mansa district in India’s Punjab province. Born on 11 June 1993, he was 28. A very popular Punjabi song-writer and rap-artist, Moosewala’s fan following was into millions.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang and a mobster from Canada have both claimed responsibility for the attack, according to police.
After Canada-based Goldy Brar claimed responsibility for the murder of Sidhu Moosewala, the Delhi Police Special Cell said on Monday that it will investigate persons associated to gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. The assassination of Punjabi artist Sidhu Moosewala may have been linked to the assassination of Akali Dal leader – Vikramjit alias Vicky Middukhera in August 2021, according to Delhi Police. Delhi Police had nabbed a criminal named Shahrukh a few days ago. Shah Rukh and two other persons went to Moosewala’s village to kill him, but when they saw the security cover, they withdrew their plan.
The tragedy occurred just a day after Punjab government withdrew 424 people’s protection, including Moosewala. As part of the Bhagwant Mann government’s effort to combat VIP culture, the security cover was revoked.
Moosewala and two of his pals were travelling in a vehicle to the hamlet of Jawahar Ke in Punjab when they were attacked.
Moosewala was found sprawled on his seat, bleeding profusely, after his SUV was riddled with gunfire. He was hurried to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. During the post-mortem examination of Sidhu Moosewala’s body, officials discovered 25 gunshot wounds. Due to gunshot damage, the right elbow has been fractured. He took the most gunshots in the chest and belly, as well as two in the right leg.
In December of last year, the singer became a member of Congress party. Sidhu Moosewala competed for Mansa district in the Punjab Assembly elections of 2022 on a Congress ticket. However, he lost to Dr Vijay Singla of the Aam Aadmi Party.
One of Punjab’s biggest pop performers, Mooseala, was known for his volatile and provocative lyrics. He was also a divisive personality who had a number of run-ins with the law.
Critics have chastised him for using his songs and social media to promote gun culture, which is a serious issue in Punjab.
During the Covid lockdown in May 2020, the musician was arrested for firing an AK-47 rifle at a shooting range. He was also the subject of a police investigation for allegedly inciting violence and gun culture in his song Sanju.
